If you are attempting to crate train your dog, remember that it is a multi-step process. When they’ve settled down with the gate open, slowly shut it and pass treats through the gate. Start off small, like 10 seconds at a time, and slowly move up the times. If your dog becomes restless, you may be ramping up too quickly.

When a dog jumps up on you, grab its paws with your hand and lightly squeeze to let them know that it is unacceptable behavior. Although it may be uncomfortable, it does not hurt them when done lightly. It won’t take much time for your dog to associate the unpleasant squeeze with jumping on a person, and he will quickly refrain from doing so.

When training your dog make sure you always get his attention in the same manner. Start each command by calling the dog’s name. This will get his attention, and then you can tell him what to do. Your dog will notice their name and they will see that you want their attention.

Stay firm when you are training your dog. You should not be extremely strict or loving all the time. Find a balance on gentle firmness to use with your dog. This will help develop a strong bond during your training session.

Consistency is key when training a dog. If multiple family members are involved in a pet’s training, make sure everyone is using the same commands and a similar system of discipline and rewards. It will make it easier for the dog if it only has a simple set of commands and knows what to expect when it obeys.

The tone of your voice is an important part of successfully disciplining your dog. Dogs are great at understanding how their trainer feels. It is okay to be appropriately stern.

Using a loose leash is key when you are training your dog to accept a leash. Canines are prone to being explorers when they are out and about. Excited pups tend to place some strain on the limitations of the leash. Great dog owners don’t allow this behavior. Instead, they encourage their dogs to walk with some slack in their leash.

Make sure your dog understands the ‘down’ command. This command helps them build upon other commands, or it can be used in emergency situations. A dog that understand his ‘down’ command will drop to the floor instantly. This could be a good command when it comes to your dog’s safety.

While it may be hard, you need to always be patient with your dog. Your dog is not human and doesn’t know English. He will only pick up on your physical gestures and your tone without knowing why you’re acting such a way. If you find you are getting frustrated to the point where you cannot stay calm, take a break from training.

Give challenges to your dog on a regular basis. Even though you know he’s been properly trained, be sure to quiz him from time to time.

Vary the treats you use as rewards for your dog during training sessions. Using treats that your dog does not usually receive help to convey they message that your training sessions are special.

Keep your dogs out of the trash by feeding them well and giving them a lot of toys. Be sure to empty the trash can often, and try to avoid putting irresistible goodies in there. Be sure to crate your dog when you go out and/or leave your trash can empty when you are gone.

When you are adding a pet to your family, make sure that it is introduced slowly to existing pets. Don’t adopt a new pet without considering the temperament of your current pet or pets. Choose a pet who has a personality that corresponds to yours.

Set the stage for success so that your dog will have little trouble learning what to chew and what not to chew. In addition to correcting undesirable behavior, you will also be protecting your dog from harm. Common household items like nylons and hairbrushes pose a grave threat to your dog and can cause him to choke.

Try using a clicker to help enforce good behavior. To use a clicker, you will be creating a positive correlation between their positive acts with the sound the clicker makes.
