Training Your Dog In A Nutshell

A dog is like a television remote in the sense that you need to program him. Your dog has the potential to be everything you want it to be, you just have to follow the right steps. Dogs already possess the means to be taught, but it is up to us to teach them.

Make sure to give your puppy plenty of toys that are okay to chew, so that he isn’t tempted to chew other things that aren’t okay to chew. Give the dog one of its own chew toys right away. In cases where your puppy is suffering a great deal of pain, try soaking a washcloth in water and freezing it as a numbing chew toy.

When using a crate to train your dog, you’ll want to make sure that you select the right size. Don’t forget, your puppy will grow. Choose a crate which will be suitable for the puppy when he matures into an adult. Your dog should be able to make itself comfortable in a crate big enough for it to toss and turn.

The first thing your dog must learn is who the boss is. Be friendly with your dog, but also be firm. When you walk your dog, walk in front of him to establish leadership.

It is not difficult to teach a dog how to roll over, and having some treats on hand makes it easier. First, place your dog in the ‘down’ position. The next step is to palm the treat and hold your hand beside your dog’s head. Slowly raise the treat over your dog’s head to the opposite side. His nose will follow the treat, naturally making him roll over. As he is rolling over say, ‘roll over’ and praise them immediately when they do. Be patient if they don’t get it right away; they’ll get it soon enough

Your dog needs to learn what the word ‘no’ means. The most effective means of training a dog involves mostly positive reinforcements. Using the word ‘no’ will not help your dog learn that a behavior is unacceptable. Dogs need tailored training to pull through.

It is not good for a puppy to train too often, it will wear it out if it has to process too much information. Remember that all dogs have short attention spans and puppies even more so. A training session that wears your puppy out is going to turn into an unpleasant memory, making him less likely to respond well to subsequent sessions, and more inclined to ignore what you are trying to teach him.

Keep track of the number of treats you give your dog. Your dog needs to watch his weight, too. It’s easy to overlook the treats, but the do add up, especially when you’re doing a lot of training.

If you use a leash to train your dog, keep it loose. When dogs are going for a walk, they will often want to check out new territory. Excited pups tend to place some strain on the limitations of the leash. Great dog owners don’t allow this behavior. Instead, they encourage their dogs to walk with some slack in their leash.

As part of good training, you should learn if your dog’s breed requires special grooming. Some breeds of dogs need little or no grooming, whereas other breeds need meticulous grooming weekly. Proper grooming results in a cleaner and happier pet, and it cuts down on the occurrence of diseases.

All of the things you teach your dog are going to be a part of their behavior and personality. Remember this if you are teasing your pet or playing with him since that can undo certain behaviors you have worked on. Work towards behavior that is desired when training your dog.

It’s very important to never try to quickly stop a bad behavior by provide a reward. This is sure to send the message that the dog has free reign and can control you. For example, don’t attempt to stop unwanted barking by giving your dog a treat.

Why does your dog bark? If you know why you can stop it. For instance, if your dog barks when someone knocks at your door, have a friend help you with training by triggering your dog’s barking as you teach him the ‘quiet’ command.

Understand that more mature dogs do have some basic limitations. Older dogs may never learn all the tricks in the book. They’ll already have habits in place you might not like. Try to change the things that are negative, to make your older dog a better pet.

Once a person has figured out how to bring out the dogs abilities to learn and be trained, it is simply a matter of practicing those techniques. Your dog will enjoy making you happy and seeing your reaction.
